机油弗列加滤清器的作用是滤去润滑油中各种有害杂质，防止零件配合表面的磨损，延长其使用寿命。通常在润滑系统中装有几个不同滤清能力的弗列加滤清器——粗滤器和细滤器，分别和主油道串联和并联，故弗列加滤清器可分全流式和分流式。全流式弗列加滤清器即粗滤器是和主油道串联在一起，因而机大部分输送润滑油都通过它，它能滤去润滑油中粒度较大的杂质。分流式弗列加滤清器即细滤器，细滤器可以滤去极细小杂质，它和主油道并联。润滑油经细滤器滤清后回到油底壳，由于在机工作运行过程中总有一部分润滑油通过细滤器进行过滤，因此提高了总体滤清效果，延长了润滑油使用寿命。C系列机全流式弗列加滤清器和分流式弗列加滤清器组成组合式机油弗列加滤清器。弗列加滤清器的上部含有全流式滤芯，下部含有旁通(分流)滤芯。流过机油弗列加滤清器全流式滤芯的润滑油，进入主油道，流过弗列加滤清器旁通滤芯的润滑油通过中心管和机油冷却器座上的管道流回油底壳。为了防止因粗滤器堵塞而断油，在机油弗列加滤清器座中还设有一个机油弗列加滤清器旁通网。正常情况下，旁通阀关闭，机油经弗列加滤清器过滤后再进入主油道当机油弗列加滤清器堵塞时，润滑油压力升高，达到旁通阀的开启压力后，旁通阀打开，润滑油直接进入主油道，从而保证机的润滑。未经滤清的润滑油将对机带来不利的影响，所以应定期更换弗列加滤清器，以保证机能良好地工作运行。N系列机机油弗列加滤清器设置在机油冷却器下部，仅有一个滤芯，弗列加滤清器座上设有旁通阀。K系列机机油弗列加滤清器采用的是旋装式纸芯弗列加滤清器，由弗列加滤清器座和滤芯组K19型机油弗列加滤清器有两个滤芯。机油弗列加滤清器上有2个柱塞—弹簧阀，一个是用来控制活塞冷却喷嘴处的油即活塞冷却阀，另一个的作用是当滤芯堵塞时旁通机油，即弗列加滤清器旁通阀。
