节温器B、C系列机采用的是蜡式、底通型节温器，推杆的一端固定在支架的中心处，另一端插人胶管的中心孔中。胶管与节温器外壳之间形成的腔体内装有精制石蜡。常温时，石蜡呈固态，弹簧将主阀门2推向上方，使之压在阀座上，主阀门关闭而副阀门随着主阀门上移，离开阀座打开。当机水温升高时，固态蜡逐渐变成液态，其体积膨胀，迫使胶管收缩，从而对推杆锥状端头产生上举力。固定不动的推杆对胶管、节温器外壳产生向下的反推力。当机水温达到规定的水温时，推杆对节温器外壳的反推力可以克服弹簧的预压力，主阀门下移开始打开，副阀门下移逐渐关闭。当水温达到和超过主阀门全开温度时，主阀门全开，而副阀门正好完全关闭。以B系列机节温器为例，说明其工作运行过程。当机开始运行时，冷却液温度较低(低于83℃)，节温器主阀门全闭，而副阀门全开，来自机缸盖出水口的循环热水从节温器副阀门的通道流回水泵进行小循环。当冷却液温度达到节温器主阀门开启温度时(≥83℃)，随着温度的逐渐升高，主阀门慢慢开启，副阀门慢慢关闭，节温器主阀门、副阀门均，处于半开状态，冷却液的大、小循环同时进行。当温度达到和超过主阀门全开温度时(≥95℃)，主阀门全开，达到最大升程，节温器副阀门正好全部关闭了小循环通道，这时全部冷却液沿出水管进入散热器进行冷却，进行大循环。
