机在打负荷工作运行时，冷却液在高温区冷却表面上常会出现沸腾而产生蒸汽泡，当蒸汽泡增多连成一片时便形成蒸汽囊；另外水管接头或水泵本身密封不良时，空气会漏进冷却系统内部而形成空气囊；由于机燃烧压力高，气缸垫密封稍有不良，燃气容易从气缸内窜入冷却系统内而形成燃气囊。这些气体在一般的情况下，可由加水盖处排出，若这些气体排不出去，在冷却系中会形成气阻，这样会造成水泵供水不足，水的流速和压力降低，会使气缸套冷却恶化而产生点蚀。残留的饿客气还会造成局部的冷却不均匀以及冷却氧化腐蚀金属等故障。膨胀水箱就是用来排出上述气体，消除冷却系的气阻现象。让冷却液在冷却回路上有膨胀机体的空间，这就是由膨胀水箱来完成。膨胀水箱又称附加水箱或高位水箱。它是一个容积不大，安装位置较高的水箱，它与散热器并联在冷却系的水路中。工作运行时使一部分冷却液流经膨胀水箱，在其内使气和水分离，经膨胀水箱的这部分冷却液流，称为除气循环。
